OTHER SIGNIFICANT AIR EMSISIONS
SULPHUR & NITROUS OXIDES
Combustion of fossil fuels onboard vessels produces Sulphur
SOx emissions are mainly due to the presence of sulphur
Oxides (SOx) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), which are not
compound in fuel. However, stricter regulations are coming
covered in scope 1 emissions. However, NOx and SOx are
into force, ensuring a global sulphur cap. Among them, the
considered greenhouse gases (GHG) and can have an adverse
IMO 2020 regulation (MARPOL Annex VI), which entered into
e昀昀ect on the environment. Both NOx and SOx form during
force January 1st 2020, states a maximum of 0.5% sulphur
combustion and are emitted into the environment in the
limit, as well as emission-controlled areas (ECA) ensuring a
form of smoke.
maximum of 0.1% sulphur limit. Consequently, SOx emission
has decreased dramatically.
The level of NOx emissions from a vessel depends on the
engine design, operating pro昀椀le, and quality of fuels. However,
Since 2019, Gearbulk has reduced the SOx emission by 81%
whereas modern engines generally generate less NOx, older
(from 14,602 to 2,788 tonnes) and our NOx by 15% (from
engines generate more.
33,413 to 28,492 tonnes) in 2024.
